Body Of 5 Year-Old Girl Found In Juarez

MEXICO CITY - The body of a 5-year-old girl was found along train tracks in a Juarez rail yard, but officials said Thursday her death did not appear to be related to a string of killings in the rough border city.

The girl, identified as Berenice Delgado Rodriguez, was reported missing Feb. 10 after her grandmother sent her to a nearby store to buy a soda, said Mauro Conde, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state attorney general's office. Officials believe she was killed the same day she disappeared.

Her body was found Wednesday fully clothed and with no signs of sexual abuse, Conde said. The girl had been stabbed more than a dozen times, including once in the heart, which caused her death.

Police had no suspects or motive in the killing.

Conde said the girl's murder did not have the same characteristics of other deaths in Juarez.

More than 300 women have been killed in the past decade in the city of 1.3 million across from El Paso, Texas. Police have confirmed that more than 75 of the cases are related to a string of rape-murders.

Many of the victims have been young women who disappeared on their way to or from jobs at maquiladora, or assembly-for-export plants.

On Monday, police found the remains of three women in the desert outside of Juarez, an areas where other bodies have been located in the past.
