Serial Murders of Women Continue in Juarez; Suspect(s) May Be American(s)

Juarez, Mexico
Another dead female turned up in Juarez, just over the border from El Paso. Reports from Mexican officials claim she's the latest victim in a string of rapes and slayings of women.

The most recent body was that of 13 year old Celia Gomez De La Cruz. She had disappeared about three weeks ago while walking home from her school bus stop. Her body was found Tuesday by a man collecting bottles in the neighborhood where five other dead women have been found this year. Cruz' school uniform was partially removed and it appeared she'd been sexually assaulted.

Different groups in the US and Mexico estimated between 129 and 192 cases of murdered women have occurred in Juarez since 1993. One source in local law enforcement said he knows of no other city in the world right now with that high of a body count. Bob Ressler, a former FBI profiler, believes numbers much lower than these signal serial killings.

Ressler, who has looked into the Juarez murders, said the number of victims attributable to repeat killers is 76. He said the killings are probably the work of several serial murderers, at least one of which is from the US.

The suspect, Ressler said, probably crosses into Mexico to prey on the women and then returns, taking advantage of rumored corruption of Mexican law enforcement and relatively relaxed border patrol policies.
